The key reasons, as I see them, are objectivity, comparability, and accountability. Reason 1: Objectivity. At their core, standardized exams are designed to be objective measures. Standardized testing poses another threat to historically marginalized students; these tests are often designed with racial, cultural, and socio-economic bias built in. I remember proctoring the now defunct California High School Exit Exam to my 10th grade students. Standardized testing in America has been a symbolic way of showing America’s commitment to ensuring that every student has an equal opportunity to education, by moving from a mission to servicing the elites to educating the masses. While standardized testing is a good thing in making sure educators know what to teach, and it holds schools accountable for education, it is also outdated and has room for improvement.
